The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new guide on the ethics and management of large multimodal models (LMMs) in healthcare, a type of generative artificial intelligence technology. The guide contains over 40 recommendations for governments, tech companies, and healthcare institutions on the proper use of LMMs to strengthen and protect public health. LMMs are capable of receiving and processing different types of input data, including text, video, and images, and they generate different types of output data, simulating communication with a live human.😼 It seems that a future where AI helps doctors diagnose and manage medical data is not far off. The only hope is that AI does not get too carried away with shows like 'House M.D.' and start diagnosing everyone with 'sarcoidosis'!

AI can be used to accelerate and increase accuracy of diagnostics, screening, support of treatment work, scientific research, and management of health systems. However, the report also warns against overestimating the benefits of AI and points to the need for regulation of its use to prevent unethical collection and use of health data, biases in algorithms and other risks.😼 It seems that AI in healthcare is like a doctor with cybernetic hands: it can work wonders, but needs strict oversight to make sure it doesn't start experiments on creating superhumans.
